The crosses of Crozant : historical and archaeological approaches

Introduction
If we sometimes find crosses of this particular form elsewhere, notably in the French Vexin or in Normandy, the fifty or so crosses present in Crozant and the neighbouring communes (Eguzon-Chantôme, Lafat, La Chapelle-Baloue, Saint-Sébastien, Fresselines and Saint-Plantaire), on the border between Indre and Creuse and the two historical regions of Berry and Limousin, continue to raise many questions :
- Why this group of crosses here ?
- In what context could they have been implanted ?
- What functions could they have had ?
- Can we have an idea of their dating ?
Concerned about their protection and their development, and aware of the challenge that scientific knowledge about them represents, the Association for the preservation of the Crozant type crosses, created in 2019, wished to join forces with the University of Limoges to organise these study days, open to the public, but intended to be of a high scientific level, and which will be followed by the publication of proceedings.
They will take place in two parts :
- The first day (Saturday, all day) will be devoted to papers by researchers,
- The second day (Sunday morning) will be devoted to guided tours.

Il est possible de prolonger la journée de dimanche en participant à l’après-midi organisé par l’association ARHAMIS.
L’Association pour la recherche en histoire et archéologie médiévale de l’Indre (Arhamis) a été créée en 1987 à Moulins-sur-Céphons (Indre). Elle a pris part aux fouilles du castrum de Moulins-sur-Céphons et de la résidence seigneuriale de Montbaron (Levroux), ainsi qu’aux recherches sur les fortifications et résidences seigneuriales de l’Indre. Elle participe à diverses publications et expositions dont l’exposition permanente des résultats des fouilles de Moulins à la médiathèque de Moulins et des expositions itinérantes (Berry médiéval, La guerre de Cent Ans entre Berry, Marche et Poitou, les Prie…).

Research topics: fortifications and seigneurial residences in the Lower Berry region in the development of the medieval landscape (land use, flora, hydraulics, metallurgy, land parcels); material and technical culture based on excavation material; measuring, sharing and demarcation of built and agricultural space: study of practical knowledge and its application in the field.
Noëlle BERTRAND, bibliothécaire honoraire, titulaire d’un D.E.A d’ethno-histoire à la Maison des sciences de l’homme, s’attache à la micro-histoire. Mais, les recherches sur les croix pattées de la région de Crozant l’amènent à considérer le sujet ailleurs en France et en Europe.
